Clayton Santiago, "A Place for Words II" at Emily Amy Gallery; artist talk to coincide with the first-ever Westside Arts District art stroll on Saturday
Community seems to be an overarching theme in this week’s To Do List. There are now two strolls to look forward to, as well as multiple group exhibitions with strong showings from local artists.

FRIDAY
Gallery Stokes
Amy Freeman: Wide Awake
Amy Freeman’s figurative painting show opens at Gallery Stokes during the Castleberry Hill 4th Friday Art Stroll from 7-10PM. Freeman’s imagery conjures narratives in response to quotidian stresses and wonder. The exhibition will run through March 21.
Sandler Hudson Gallery
New Works by Greely Myatt and Pat Courtney
Two shows open this Friday at Sandler Hudson Gallery: Greely Myatt’s “Sometimes I Settle for a Chuckle” and Pat Courtney’s “Judith’s Gift.” Myatt’s playful work challenges boundaries while Courtney’s is text-inspired and photography based. The exhibition features an installation and new pieces. The opening reception is from 7-9PM. The show will continue through April 4.
SATURDAY
Westside Arts District Art Walk
This Saturday the Westside Arts District is kicking off their first ever Art Walk (see also Fresh Loaf here). The stroll will be from 11AM – 5PM. It is designed similarly to Castleberry’s Art Stroll in that all participating galleries will be open to the public for the stroll. Several venues will be hosting talks and tours of their spaces. This is a great opportunity to see all of the galleries on the Westside in one fell swoop.
Participating galleries include The Contemporary, Bobbie Gillis Gallery, Emily Amy Gallery, Get This! Gallery, Kiang Gallery, SALTWORKS, Sandler Hudson Gallery, and Octane Coffee Bar. Events scheduled for the walk are listed below:

Artist Survival Skills Series
This week’s installment in this series features Curator Gabriel Perez-Barreiro. His lecture “The Geometry of Hope: Utopian Abstraction in Latin America 1930-1970″ explores ideas of Utopia and social transformation in South American art. Director Brian Holcombe leads a tour of the gallery’s current exhibition, “Cumanana,” organized by artist William Cordova. Artists Glexis Novoa, Ernesto Oroza, and Mary Valverde will be highlighted. The tour begins at 2PM at SALTWORKS.Get This! Gallery
Drew Conrad discusses his current exhibition at Get This! Gallery, “Cowboys, Lovers and Nobodies,” about the mystified American male. The artist talk begins at 2 p.m. at Get This! Gallery.

Guthman Musical Instrument Competition
Georgia Tech
Showcase of New Musical Instruments
Finalists from the Guthman competition deliver a public performance at the Center for Music Technology. The performance showcases musician inventor’s groundbreaking ideas in music. The event should be pretty exciting for anyone with an interest in design, musicality, and engineering. Doors open at 11AM and the judging is at 3PM.

Battle Cats and Beast Moans
A group show featuring artists with an alternative perspective in water-based media. Included in the show are Sean Abrahams, Kelly Cloninger, Luiz Coelho, Monica Ellis, Amiynah Hanna, McCalla Hill, Lindy Lane, Ann-Marie Manker, Jennifer McHugh, Laura Ann Meyers, Gillian Zagorski, and others. The show is located at 290 MLK (between Eyedrum and the Mattress Factory Lofts). The show is from 7-11PM.

“All Small” Night of Performance
All of the performances in this evening’s events are under 60 seconds. This is part of the Dalton Gallery’s current exhibition “All Small Redux” which features works under 6 inches. The performances begin at 7PM at Dalton Gallery.

Philip Guston. (American, born Canada. 1913-1980). Gladiators. 1940.
The Contemporary
Philip Guston, A Life Lived
This film documents Philip Guston visiting his retrospective at the San Fransisco MOMA in 1980. Guston discusses history and the evolution of his work. This would make a great date night for any Modernist fans. The Contemporary will be screening the film at 6PM.
Swan Coach House Gallery
Scratching the Surface
This exhibit includes 26 Georgia and Southeastern artists who work in a variety of media. They all, you guessed it, somehow scratch the surfaces of their work to create their imagery and designs. The opening reception is from 6-8PM. The show continues through April 25 at Swan Coach House Gallery.
