4 Atlanta articles worth reading
If you’re having a slow start kicking back into the daily grind of checking your Google Reader, you really should know that you’ve been missing out. I’m happy to report that our local arts journalists are keeping the discussion going.
1. Cinque Hicks is in the midst of a series of articles for Creative Loafing that examine Atlanta’s art world from various sociocultural perspectives. The first installment, “The promises and pitfalls of Atlanta’s art-collecting ethos,” takes a look at the galleries and high-end collectors based in Atlanta.
2. The second article, “Are enough younger collectors stepping up in Atlanta?” focuses on what is needed to push Atlanta into the next decade and the role of the younger communities of collectors that are cropping up. Keep your eye out for the third article which is soon to be released. Hicks, as usual, provides thoughtful and critical insight into the socioeconomic climate of Atlanta’s art community.
3. Following where Hicks’ series leaves off, Cathy Fox has a story on ArtsCriticATL about Louis Corrigan’s brainchild, Flux Projects. Flux Projects is an organization that supports innovative temporary art projects around metro Atlanta, the most notable of which is Le Flash. The profile is an optimistic and hopefully inspiring tale of what a single person’s contribution can do in a community like Atlanta.
4. Also by Cathy Fox, “Budget evisceration at the Georgia Council for the Arts” tells the gory details of the latest slash to state arts funding.
And, of course, our very own BURNAWAY always offers new batches of reviews, commentary, and event agendas throughout the week.
